Jessica Simson is a 17 year-old junior at Southern Garrett High School. She was born in Salisbury, Maryland and moved to the mountains of Deep Creek Lake, Oakland, Maryland at the age of 6. She lives with her parents, John and Judy Simson and her brother Jeffrey. The oldest brother Joey attends West Virginia University.
While in high school, Jessica has been involved with Student Government for the past 3 years, holding various officer positions. She has been involved in the Student Improvement Team, making positive changes for the student body and presenting ideas/changes to the faculty and elected officials. She was voted Rotary Student of the Year for two consecutive years. She has been involved in theater, and just completed the performance of Les Miserables.
Jessica has had a love of reading since a very young age. She enjoys using her imagination and learning through the pages of books. She feels that without the ability to read, one's imagination, opportunities and dreams are limited.
Jessica is a dedicated volunteer and as a National Spokesperson for Reach out and Read she travels in her community and across the nation promoting early literacy and the importance of reading aloud to children.
Reach Out and Read has a variety of outreach programs throughout the country and introduces parents and children to reading at a young age. ROR has book drives and fundraisers in order to give a book to every child that participates in the program. Jessica volunteers her time by reading to children in hospital settings as well as outreach facilities in a variety of states. Jessica hopes to help promote early childhood literacy throughout the country in order to assist parents and young children in establishing better early reading skill and habits.
Jessica has been riding horses since she was 5. She continues to strive to improve her skills and compete at a challenging level. She has been working at a variety of barns as a working student. In order for her to improve her skills and be employed as a working student, she has had to live away from home during the summers since the age of 14. Her love and passion for horses will continue to inspire her to work hard and follow her dream of being a show jumper. Her other interests include snowboarding, downhill skiing, snowmobiling, tennis and enjoying the lake and mountains of Deep Creek Lake. She also models for a variety of agencies in Baltimore and New York and participates in classes at the John Robert Powers Modeling/Talent Agency.
Since winning the title of Miss Teen Maryland International 2009, Jessica has been busy participating in a variety of activities and has been enjoying the wonderful people she has met so far. She is looking forward to a year of fun and excitement as well ass touching the lives of many. Jessica is working hard towards competing at Nationals in Chicago in hopes of bringing the home the crown of Miss Teen International to the state of Maryland!
